When you’re coming up in any profession, there are those people who are a generation ahead that you look up to. The kids coming up today would probably look up to Capt Ronnie Fields and owner Gray Ingram, I know I do. When I was a kid, it was Captains like Bobby Brown, Bart Miller, Peter Wright and especially the team of Capt. Skip Smith and owner Jerry Dunaway. In this podcast, I catch up with Capt. Skip Smith at the offices of Smith-Merritt Insurance at Merritt’s Boat and Engine Works in Pompano Beach, FL. We talk about how his career got started, world travel on the Madam and Hooker mothership operation, and ultra-light tackle world-record fishing with the Dunaways.

At the top of the program Skip mentions Jeff Fay showing up in Florida with a ‘Frank’. That would be Frank Cunningham from Kona.

Hi, Do you know if Frank Cunningham is still living there? There was a Captain Frank Cunningham living in Paihia, NZ in the 1990’s who had done a lot of fishing in Kona – I just wondered if that’s the same person and would like to get hold if him if it is. Thanks

Utterly brilliant! Your dad sounds a really nice guy. As for his swordfish, what an achievement. ***** stars from me
